About the project
When one of Auckland’s main sewer transmission lines, the Ōrākei Main Sewer, collapsed in September 2023, Watercare selected Channeline to design and manufacture the liners for a 120 m long emergency bypass.
The sewer is a 2.3 m by 1.5 m diameter egg shape. Thanks to Channeline's custom design and manufacture processes, liners can be produced in any shape and any size, no matter how unique, creating a precise fit within any existing structure to maximise efficacy, including hydraulic capacity.
The sewer is in a busy urban area with limited space, meaning trenchless techniques were essential to ensure minimal public disruption. Installation was performed by Watercare’s contractor March Cato, and Channeline also provided coaching throughout this process, including providing an on-site expert.
Following the successful repair of this section, Watercare and March Cato now turn their attention to the next stages of the renewal works, with Watercare committing to rehabilitate 1.6 km of the sewer in stages over the next few years.
